Every pool runs the same loop: water leaves through the skimmer and main drain, gets pushed by the pump through the filter, the pool heater, and the sanitizer, and returns to the pool. When one part fails, the symptom often shows up somewhere else. A pool heater that won't fire is often a pump or filter that isn't moving enough water.

- 1Skimmer & main drain. Where water leaves the pool. A crack at the skimmer is one of the most common leaks.
- 2Pump. Pulls water from the pool and pushes it through everything else. If it stops, everything stops.

- 4Pool heater or heat pump. Needs good water flow to fire. Many heater faults are really flow problems.

California pump rule
Pump motor died? The replacement will be variable-speed
Since July 19, 2021, replacement pool pump motors of 0.5 total horsepower or more sold in California must be variable-speed (California Energy Commission). Your working single-speed pump can stay. When it fails, expect a variable-speed replacement, which can cut running costs when it's set up right.

Do you need a permit to replaster a pool in California?
It depends on the city and the scope of work. When a remodel permit is issued for a single-family home's pool, state law requires at least two of seven drowning-prevention features. See pool permits and SB 442.
Can a pool pump be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Many pump problems (capacitors, seals, bearings, O-rings) are repairs. A burned-out motor on an older single-speed pump is usually replaced, and in California that replacement will generally be variable-speed. See pool pump repair.
